Sex improves memory: another plus of making love
A recent study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior proves the connection between sex and memory (especially in words). Participants who practice sex more often with penetration showed a better verbal memory than more “lazy” ones.
The study was conducted on 78 women aged from 18 to 29 years in the form of a survey about various aspects of life and showing random words and people on the computer. Then they mixed up new and old letters and images and had to identify them.
Sex lovers better remembered the words shown, but with photographs, they did not reveal a correlation. Researchers attribute this to the fact that vaginal sex contributes to the improvement of neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells) in the area of the hippocampus, which is associated precisely with verbal memory.
Although the experiments were associated with short-term memory, the authors of the study believe that the same will be long-term. And with other functions for which the hippocampus is responsible, too (for example, orientation in space). Of course, the study is small and relies only on the responses of the participants themselves about their sex life, but it is always nice to know that sex has another useful feature!
