On holiday for the New Year: where and with whom to leave your pet during the holidays?

Option number 1. Take with us

Pros:
  • The first and undoubted plus is that neither you nor your pet will experience stress due to separation.
  • Many dog breeds are great travel companions.
  • No one better than you can provide your pet proper care and supervision.

Minuses:
  • A lot of trouble will be associated with planning a trip: you need to find a hotel where you can live with your pet, take care of your passport and other documents, learn about the rules for keeping animals in the country where you are going.
  • A long journey and flight is a big stress for an animal, especially if you have never taken out a pet before, even outside the city.

If you fly to an exotic country in winter, the risk of animal acclimatization increases. In addition, there is the possibility of the development of infectious diseases or the appearance of parasites. Take into account the country's climate and animal characteristics of the animal: for example, with a Malamute, you should not go to the United Arab Emirates, and take Chihuahuas to a ski resort in the Alps. All brachycephalous (dogs and cats with a shortened muzzle, for example, bulldogs, pugs, Persians) do not tolerate both heat and cold.
Transporting an animal always involves additional expenses.
What to consider:
Traveling with animals is allowed only after vaccination and quarantine is completed (at least 21 days after vaccination), the animal must be chipped. Without these requirements, simply do not go abroad - you will not be given an international veterinary certificate. Before you travel, consult your veterinarian: if the animal has any diseases, it is better not to expose it to stress. Older pets are also better left at home to avoid the development of hidden pathologies.

Before departure, be sure to contact the airline to confirm the possibility of transporting a pet on the selected flight. If the flight is already registered, for example, someone's dog, then the cat may be refused in flight. All carriers have uniform requirements for carrying - it must be plastic, with the door tightly closing on the latch, and its dimensions in the number of measurements should not exceed 115 cm so that the temporary cabin for transportation can be placed under the seat in front of the chair.

If your pet is a large breed dog, be prepared for the fact that he will have to fly separately from you in the luggage compartment. Do not forget to purchase an additional ticket for it and arrive at the airport in advance for veterinary control.

Often, owners forget to learn the rules of keeping pets in the country of rest. It is important to find out if the muzzle is obligatory for the dog, cleaning during the walk, whether the ban on the presence of pets in public places is in effect. In some countries, it is forbidden to leave the dog alone in an apartment or hotel for longer than a certain time.

Option number 2. Leave at home under the supervision of friends
Pros:
  • Low-stress level for a pet: it is on its territory, surrounded by familiar smells and toys.
  • It is possible to maintain the usual mode and level of activity of the animal.
  • No additional costs.

Minuses:
  • Some animals are very painful to tolerate separation from the owner, and even the best friend of the family, familiar to the pet since childhood, will not be able to replace his master. As a rule, animals alone eat and drink very little, their main pastime in the absence of the owner is sleep.
  • Separate breeds are extremely aggressive towards strangers, and this complicates the joint presence of a person and a pet in the same territory.

What to consider:
The intensity of the experience of parting depends on the breed, and not on the type of animal. Sphynxes, Bengal and Abyssinian cats are very contacted, and therefore require a lot of attention. For them, even a short separation will be a great stress. The British, for example, have a completely different character: they calmly endure loneliness, if only on their territory. The same goes for dogs. Active terriers, retrievers, labradors do not find a place without an owner. Calm rocks like Shih Tzu, Shar-Pei, Basset Hounds will more easily endure temporary separation.

Before leaving, you need to advance to give the cat or dog a sniff of a future "nanny" - this will allow negating the aggression that occurs in an animal towards strangers. You must visit the animal at least once a day - and not only pour food into the bowl, pour clean water (it is better to arrange several bowls with water or put a special drinking fountain) and change the contents of the tray, but also to communicate, play with it. For dry food, there are also dispensers that augment the bowl as it is emptied.

To the pet was more fun alone, you can buy interactive toys for it, which do not require the participation of the owner.

Do not forget to clean up the house, removing all potentially dangerous to the cat or dog things and turning off electrical appliances, be sure to close all windows, you can leave a ventilation window protected by a mosquito net. Be sure to leave a friend or relatively detailed instructions on feeding, hygiene and tell about the pet's habits.
Option number 3. Leave in the zoo hotel
Pros:

  • The ability to monitor the pet online, by webcam or staff reports. Rescues in hopeless situations.

Minuses:

  • There is a risk of inadequate care if you choose an untested hotel.
  • Other animals may be carriers of infections, and the premises may not be disinfected after the previous "tenants".
  • The high level of stress due to the smells of other animals, strangers, and unusual environments.
  • The cost of accommodation.

What to consider:

Choose zoo hotels where professionals work - dog experts, felinologists, veterinary doctors. Be sure to visit the place and evaluate whether there is a playground for walking, whether it is clean in the enclosures and on the territory, whether it is spacious enough for animals. The blacklist includes hotels where cats and dogs are kept nearby, enclosures stand on top of each other, where you have not been asked about vaccinations, feeding characteristics, and pet character. To reduce the level of stress, it is worth bringing a familiar toilet filler, a tray, a stove bench, as well as a pair of favorite toys to the hotel with the animal. "Native" smells calm the pet, and the adaptation process will be easier.
